Supergirl - 'The Last Children of Krypton'

This looks pretty badass until you remember that one of these people could
melt the other's head with his eyes.
We follow on from last week with Cousin Supes still visiting from Metropolis, hanging out with Kara, saving peeps and occasionally glowering at J'onn J'onz for his kryptonite having and Myriad stopping(1). Kara is gutted when Clark decides it's time to head him and live his actual life, and considers going with him so as to let her friends in Central City do the same, especially as the editor of CatCo Magazine refuses to recognise Kara's hiring as a reporter. This latter Cat Grant refuses to deal with as it's time for Kara to fight her own corner, especially as she is planning on taking a leave of absence to find her centre and do her zen thing or something. Knock on the sky and listen to the noise, maybe.

The real shocker is that Cat Grant is leaving a series and I'm genuinely sorry to see her go.

"It's not easy being mean."
Then a routine suicide-talking-down turns ugly when the 'suicide' turns out to be last week's assassin, Jerky McBritish, now transformed into a Kryptonite-powered Frankenstein sorta deal named Metallo, who shoots green beams out of his chest and basically ruins Superdays. Even with two of them on hand, the titular last children are beaten to a retreat after Kara mistakenly poses in front of the chest beam(2).

Superman gets into it with J'onn over the whole 'other people having Kryptonite' bit(3), and it turns out a shipment was nicked a ways back and he didn't say, because... channeling the morphic douchebaggery of the Henshaw form? Anyway, Wynn uses Kryptonite radiation to help Alex track a mole in the DEO as Cadmus announce their intention to thwart the secret invasion of the alien 'heroes'. Alex is nabbed by Cadmus Lady and two heavies, and gets to kick some arse. A second Metallo wrecks 'Krypton Park' in Metropolis(4) and things are looking pretty grim until Kara realises the enemy's weakness; they expect the aliens to stand alone and above their allies.

"What were we drinking?"
Wynn builds anti-Kryptonite shield for our heroes based on Non's tech, and helps Alex to see why - insensitive as it might be to say it - Kara might feel no-one but Kal gets her. Then the two Supers split up to lure the two Metallos to attack, only for Clark to be supported by J'onn and Kara by Alex in Non's exoskeleton. As Kara puts it, faces get punched, and I'm pretty sure that Kara - who mocks her cousin for not drinking and flying, despite alcohol having no effect on him - isn't as strict on that no killing thing, at the very least not counting assists, as MM and Superman remove Metallo-2's Kryptonite core and put him on ice, and Kara holds Metallo-1 while Alex runs him through with a pipe.

Kal and Cat depart, with J'onn allowing Kal to take all the known stocks of Kryptonite and destroy them. James gets Cat's old job and Kara presents an article on the Metallo battles to her boss, Snapper Carr, which is good enough to get her a probationary position on the magazine. Cadmus is still out there, and Jeremiah Danvers is still having something horrible done to him, but our hero is where she needs to be and ready to save the world again.

Oh, and the dude from the crashed pod wakes up and goes all stranglehands.

'The Last Children of Krypton' is another enjoyable entry in the now CW show. Aside from the new DEO base there's not a lot to show for the reduced budget, and the action is as excellent as ever. Despite a lapse into thoughtlessness, Kara remains a delightful lead in both personae, with excellent support from her racially-diverse, non-threatening supporting cast.

(1) The show doesn't go this way, but J'onn is a world of right on this one.
(2) Seriously. Just stands on a car after boxing pretty clever the rest of the fight.
(3) Point to Supes this time.
(4) Like the memorial in Batman vs. Superman, but less messianic.
